Marina and her Diamonds

I’m not the type to be a popstar fan. I quite like the odd song I hear on the radio, and I’ve sung in choirs for as long as I can remember so I consider myself relatively musical. And I really really love ABBA, much to my boyfriend’s horror. But I haven’t described myself as a “fan” of anything since I loved the Spice Girls age 11. And then I saw Marina.

I watched the above, and… wow. Go Marina! I watched her other videos: Mowgli’s Road, Obsessions, Hollywood. I started listening to all her songs on endless repeat. I read her blog – this girl speaks her mind*. I truly haven’t been obsessed with any music this much since I wore out my ABBA Gold tape.

Marina and the Diamonds is her stage name. Confusing, I know, she’s a single artist. The fans are supposedly the diamonds – but I prefer her other explanation. That’s that a lot of people put a lot of work into producing an artist – record producers, musicians, stylists, video directors etc. and ‘Marina and the Diamonds’ is an acknowledgement that she’s not just the star, she’s supported by a lot of other people. I think that’s an incredibly mature attitude.

Marina’s just come second in the Sound of 2010 competition, so good luck to her, I hope to see much more of her this year! I already have her album on iTunes pre-order.

* Check out her thoughts on Shakira – it seems to have gone from her site but it’s on a forum here. I really like that she thinks about the issues of female sexuality even if she does seem to be a little confused about it – but then aren’t we all?
